Our third project engages a series of essays from Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Kimmerer is a botanist but also a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Her writing explores what indigenous traditions as well as plants and animals have to teach us about the crisis in our relationship with nature, about environmental racism and injustice, and about the proper role of gratitude and mutual respect in our public life. Building on a close reading of her text and frequent response writing, your essay on Kimmerer will explore these issues but also engage her style as a writer, exploring literary techniques you may be able to put to use in your own writing. Suggested length: 1200 words.
