Please analyze one of the five elements (plot, character, setting, point of view, or theme) as it creates meaning in any of the stories we have read for class. By the time you write your essay, you will have read twelve stories! Create a thesis-based literary analysis about how the element you’ve chosen works in the story of your choice. Key questions to consider for your particular element are listed in chapter 30 of Literature to Go (“Writing about Fiction” pages 869-870 in the third edition). The sample student essay in that chapter models a thesis statement about how setting creates meaning in the story “A&P” and is an excellent example of how to write a literary analysis.
