Discussion Question: With relatively few elections in 2021, the attempted recall of Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democrat of California garnered a lot of media attention. California is not new to recalling their governor (See Gray Davis in 2003). Not every state has a recall mechanism in their state constitution for the governor’s office. What were the issues at stake here for proponents and opponents of the recall effort? How did the recall get to the ballot and was it constitutional? How did different parts of the state of California break down in terms of “yes” and “no” votes? Lastly, why do you think Gov. Newsom was ultimately successful?
